Monero (XMR) is a privacy-focused cryptocurrency launched in April 2014. It aims to provide users with untraceable and anonymous transactions, distinguishing itself from many other cryptocurrencies where transaction details are publicly visible.
Monero utilizes several cryptographic techniques to ensure transaction privacy. These include ring signatures, which mix a user's transaction with others to obscure the sender, and stealth addresses, which generate a unique one-time address for each transaction to conceal the recipient. Ring Confidential Transactions (RingCT) hide the amount of XMR being transacted.
Due to its privacy features, all units of Monero are considered fungible, meaning each unit is interchangeable and indistinguishable from another. This contrasts with cryptocurrencies where transaction history can potentially "taint" certain units. Monero has a dynamic block reward that gradually decreases over time, eventually reaching a perpetual tail emission of 0.6 XMR per block to incentivize miners.
Monero is an open-source project primarily driven by its community. Development is decentralized, with contributions from various independent developers and researchers. The project emphasizes ongoing research into cryptographic advancements to further enhance its privacy and security features.
