Bitcoin (BTC) is a decentralized digital currency, often referred to as the first cryptocurrency. It was introduced in 2008 by an anonymous entity known as Satoshi Nakamoto and launched in 2009. Bitcoin operates on a peer-to-peer network, allowing transactions to occur directly between users without the need for intermediaries.
At its core, Bitcoin utilizes a technology called blockchain. This is a distributed public ledger that records all transactions in a secure and immutable manner. Each "block" contains a timestamp and transaction data, and is linked to the previous block, forming a chain.
New Bitcoins are introduced into circulation through a process called "mining." Miners use powerful computers to solve complex mathematical puzzles, and upon successful completion, they are rewarded with new Bitcoins and transaction fees. The total supply of Bitcoin is capped at 21 million coins, a design feature intended to create scarcity.
A key characteristic of Bitcoin is its decentralized nature. There is no central authority, such as a bank or government, controlling the network. Instead, it is maintained by a global network of computers, making it resistant to censorship and single points of failure.
