Ethereum (ETH) is a decentralized, open-source blockchain platform that enables smart contracts and decentralized applications (dApps) without any downtime, censorship, fraud, or third-party interference. It was proposed in 2013 by Vitalik Buterin and launched in 2015.
At its core, Ethereum facilitates smart contracts, which are self-executing contracts with the terms of the agreement directly written into code. These contracts automatically execute when predetermined conditions are met, removing the need for intermediaries.
Ether (ETH) is the native cryptocurrency of the Ethereum network. It is used to pay for transaction fees (known as "gas") and computational services on the network. ETH can also be used for staking in the network's proof-of-stake consensus mechanism.
