Bitcoin (BTC) is a decentralized digital currency, often considered the first successful cryptocurrency. It was introduced in 2008 by an anonymous entity known as Satoshi Nakamoto and launched in 2009. Transactions are recorded on a public distributed ledger called a blockchain.
Bitcoin operates on a peer-to-peer network, allowing transactions to occur directly between users without an intermediary. New bitcoins are created through a process called "mining," where powerful computers solve complex mathematical problems to validate and add new blocks of transactions to the blockchain. This process also secures the network.
The total supply of Bitcoin is capped at 21 million coins, a fundamental aspect of its design. A significant event in its economic model is the "halving," which occurs approximately every four years. During a halving, the reward for mining new blocks is cut in half, reducing the rate at which new bitcoins are introduced into circulation.
Initially conceived as an electronic cash system, Bitcoin has evolved to be used for various purposes, including digital payments, a store of value, and as a speculative asset. Its decentralized nature and limited supply are often cited as key characteristics.
